On Nov. 2, 2012, the teams participating in the 2013 Texas Energy Innovation Challenge arrived in Hidalgo County, Texas, to visit a colonias as they began working on their academic study to provide a solution for the lack of energy access for Texas’ colonias.

Power Across Texas leaders are touring colonias in Hidalgo and Cameron Counties today with student and faculty team representatives from Texas A&M University, Texas Tech University and the University of Texas at Austin as well as representatives from the Colonia Initiatives Program from the Texas Office of the Secretary of State.
In addition to the tour, our team enjoyed a lunch presentation (hosted by AEP) with Blanca Villalpando, District Manager for State Senator Eddie Lucio, as well as Lupita Ortega & Oliver De La Garza from the Texas Office of the Secretary of State.
A resident of the colonias shared with our team that her family got electricity 6 weeks ago despite having lived next to the main extricating pole for over 20 years.
